Set Your Style Goals for 2020

What do you want your style to say about you this year? How do you want your style to make you feel? What changes do you want to make to your wardrobe to better flatter your body and your personality? Have you ever thought about your wardrobe in this way?

I would say that most of us don’t think about our wardrobe in a strategic way. But we should. How do you decide on what to buy and how to fill your closet? We should be choosing items that fit not only our bodies but also our lifestyles. We should be choosing items that compliment what we love about your current wardrobe. We should be donating items that sit in our closets unworn month after month.

When you start to think about your wardrobe in this way it can be both overwhelming and empowering. In order to feel more empowered than overwhelmed, try to think of it in steps. First steps are to clean out your closet and donate items you no longer use. Only keep what you love and what fits. Now look at what is left and make a list of what you need to fill out that wardrobe. Start with the very basics. What do you need for your everyday life? This answer will be different for everyone. Think about where you go, the places that you frequent, and what you need to wear to those places.

Perhaps you got hung up on the part where I mentioned “fit”. Perhaps you sped right by it but shouldn’t have. Let’s stop here for a moment. How do you define the right fit for your body? We need to be brutal when trying things on. Take a good look in the mirror. Are the seams hitting all the right places? Is the hem where it should be? What about the length? The right fit for your body should flatter your shape. And because everyone is shaped differently the clothes you try on will not fit you the same way they do the model… any model.

This is where it makes sense to focus your efforts first. You might be thinking… what comes next? Once you’ve got a handle on the basics, you can start thinking about colors, textures, patterns. What silhouettes and necklines flatter you most? What clothing gives you confidence and why? When you start to break down your wardrobe this way, it can actually make shopping and deciding what you wear in the morning, much easier.

So here is to a bright and bold new year! Make all your style goals now and let’s get started.

It’s hard to find styles that are universally flattering. In lieu of such, see some examples of simple silhouettes from J. Crew below to give you an idea of where to start.

In the market for a new Tee?

I love a soft cozy t-shirt. But I didn't always feel that way. There was a time when I almost never wore a t-shirt. I was much more comfortable in a structured top. I found t-shirts to be too form fitting. It just wasn't my style.

Then I found a t-shirt with structure in a slightly thicker cotton fabric. This was more in line with my style and something I started to try. Then a couple of years ago, I found the J.Crew Vintage Cotton V-Neck T-Shirt. This tee had a nice deep V-neck that was form flattering on me even though it came in a much lighter cotton fabric. I fell in love with it fast. I found that I loved the soft vintage feel of it. And I started to appreciate the ease of a t-shirt.

I started shopping around for t-shirts. I found that I preferred certain styles, necklines and fabrics. I found that a flattering tee can be the answer to wardrobe hassles when looking for something simple and casual. I also found that my carefully chosen t-shirts could be dressed up or down for the right look. I realized I could layer on jewelry or a cardigan to get the style I was looking for.

So here is my advice: Shop around for the t-shirt that flatters you best. There are plenty of options available. Find the fabric, neckline and color that works best for your body and skin tone. Don't settle. Finding the right tee is essential. It can simplify your wardrobe and make for a great standby piece.

Below I've highlighted a few of my current favorites. Happy shopping!

How Important is Your Neckline?

When considering an overall look, neckline is a significant factor. How can that be? Well, the shape of your face and your whole body for that matter are complimented by the style of the clothes that you wear. Have you ever noticed women that almost always look good? Maybe it's a celebrity or someone in your office. They look good in the clothes that they wear. Do you wonder how they do that? No matter what their body type or height or weight, they know how to dress their body. That's the key.

This starts out small. Take notice of what it is about your favorite outfits that makes them your favorite. Is it the color that makes your eyes pop, or the style that highlights your best features? When you try on new clothes, ask yourself if they really work for you. You're not just shopping for a dress, you're shopping for a dress meant for you!

If this whole concept seems a bit overwhelming, start out with something simple like your neckline. What is the best neckline for your face? Honestly I find it hard to determine which shape my face fits into. But I know when I look in a mirror if something looks good on me or doesn't. Over the years I've tried on so many different styles that I know which necklines will work for me and which ones will not. I also know which ones look the best and which are passable. Because I know this, it's easy for me to quickly weed out items that I know will not work for me when I shop. This saves me the trouble of buying something online that I will simply have to return immediately. It also saves me the hassle of trying on an item in store only to be disappointed in the fitting room.

Your neckline not only has a direct effect on your face, but it can also set the tone for your outfit. Something low cut in the front, no matter how casual, can give off a sexual vibe. A higher neckline can come off as conservative or professional. Be sure to pick the right neckline for the right occasion. This will help you to look well dressed for any occasion.

Many items, down to your basic t-shirts come in a variety of necklines. This gives you an opportunity to find the style that works best for you! Take these Vintage T-shirts from J.Crew. Not sure what neckline works best for you? Try on all three to see what looks best!
