Many of the lovely ladies I have the pleasure of working with struggle with cute weekend casual. I think weekend casual (without the cute) is leggings and an oversized sweater this time of year. But cute weekend casual is something different. My clients want to look put together … not thrown together. Weekend casual is more thrown together. Add the “cute” … now you look more put together.
So how do you do this?
It’s easier than you might think. If you put a few basics in your wardrobe, you’re good to go for the next 6 months. I mean it. We’re talking about 2 days a week. You can pull together multiple mix and match outfits from a few key pieces. Some of which you may already own.
The first is a good pair of jeans. I know we all love our yoga pants and leggings. But don’t discount the versatility of a good pair of jeans. Current trends dictate that skinny or slim dark wash jeans are the way to go. If your jeans are uncomfortable, you’re not wearing the right pair. Finding the right fit and wash is a big deal in jeans. They are not all created equal! If you’re looking to buy, try on a whole bunch of different sizes and brands to find the one that’s right for you!
Next up are some basic tees. Long or short sleeve, v-neck or crewneck, there are lots of choices here. Pick what works best for you from a style and color perspective. These are great pieces that can be layered and accessorized to your liking.
It’s cold out there so it’s time to talk sweaters. Again there is a lot of room here for personalization. If you like open cardigans, layer them over your basic tees. If you prefer pullovers, find the best neckline for your shape. Vests make another great layering piece. Place this over your tee or your pullover and you’re adding another element to mix and match into that weekend wardrobe.
When it comes to your shoes, leave the sneakers for the gym. I know, I know, they are so functional and when you’re running errands on the weekends, you're basically running so you should be wearing sneakers. Well, I go back to looking thrown together vs. put together. Shoes help the put together look come together. Now, just because they’re shoes doesn’t mean they have to be uncomfortable. A cute pair of flats or ankle booties can be comfortable and pull your look together. Ballet flats or loafers can be both functional and easy. When I’m in and out of the house I love to have easy flats that I can slip on and off quickly. If you’re out for the day and want a little more warmth on those feet, pick a pair of ankle booties to go with those skinny jeans.
Next you want to accessorize. We are past the basics, now it’s time to add your personal touch. This is where you make your outfit “yours”. Do you like a big blanket scarf? Do you have favorite jewelry or a great moto jacket? Any of these are optional pieces that add personal touch to your own style. For cute weekend casual, I usually keep jewelry simple. I always fallback on pearl earrings (that my mom gave me), a couple of bracelets and a gold chain (with my initial). Depending on where I’m headed I may change up my earrings but I have my go to’s that I love and don’t question those. Find the accessories that you love and go with those.
The most important piece of all this is to remember to add your own personal style touch. It’s about what makes you happy, comfortable and confident.
Now, go conquer the weekend!
