The weather here in New England has been down to single digits this week. For someone like myself who prefers a beach to the ski slopes, this is torture. Now, I’ve lived in New England all my life. This is home. And over time I’ve found the coats and boots to get me through. However, I always seem to struggle with my accessories. And I know I’m not alone.
I struggle here for a number of reasons. One, I hesitate to spend a lot of money on gloves/mittens because I lose them all the time. And I’m not someone who usually misplaces items. I have nice sunglasses that I have had for years. But every year, without fail, I seem to lose at least one glove.
I tried on a really nice pair of UGG gloves this year but didn’t think twice about buying them because they would never last with me. And then I would cry when they were gone. However, even though I don’t want to spend a lot of money, I still want good quality items that look cute. Also, considering that I lose these types of items on a rather consistent basis, I also find it a good idea to buy extra when they are on sale. That time is now.
You might be wondering what to look for in your cold weather accessories? Well, if you are interested in maximizing your warmth, be sure to check the labels. Find out what the fabric is made of. Wool and cashmere will give you a little extra warmth. Often you will find items come in blends (meaning that they combine fabrics). So you find that a scarf is a combination of merino wool, alpaca and nylon. My alpaca and cashmere sweaters are the warmest in my closet. If you can find these in cold weather accessories they will be warm. Keep this in mind.
Also be mindful of the stitching. I have a pom pom hat that I love from the Gap. It looks so cute. But the stitching is such that it leaves holes in the hat which result in it not being as warm as I wish it was. When I comes to hats, find the style that works best for your face and then match the hat to your function. For example: I own a felt hat that I toured London in last year. It was a good size brim and it was perfect for that trip. Kept me warm and my hair looking good (not matted to my head). This hat was perfect for my trip (just me and my husband – looking chic in London). My pom pom hat was perfect for a horse ride with the kids in Boston (more casual).
When it comes to scarves, I have lots. My favorite is actually a cashmere Portolano scarf that I bought years ago. I only wear it out when I’m headed someplace nice. I take good care of it so it will last. My everyday scarves are varied, but I like something a little thicker when it’s this cold and soft. Good scarves can be found just about anywhere. Again, pay attention to the fabric and the stitching. If you already have something you love at home, check the fabric. Then when you go shopping you’ll know what you like!
If you’re looking to add an extra piece (or two) to your closet this winter, now is the time. Cold weather accessories are at a deep discount in most cases and before you know it stores will be carrying resort wear and those hats/scarves/gloves will be impossible to find!
