Dressing "Appropriately" with Versatile Options

Over the holidays I had a chance to catch up with some girlfriends. We were chatting about the family reunions and get-togethers that usually take place around the holidays. One friend of mine told a story about one of her younger cousins who came to their family reunion dressed in a very short mini-skirt and crop top. An outfit that might be considered “inappropriate” for such an event. This story got us talking about how we’ve noticed this in other scenarios as well. Where sometimes we’ve encountered people who just don’t dress appropriately for the event they are attending. This got all of us (and especially me) thinking about how we learn to dress for the event we’re attending or for the job that we commute to.

Workplace wardrobes have evolved enormously over the years. Going from corporate office jobs that required a business attire to tech startups where employees not only wear jeans, they wear their pajamas to work! Seems like industry plays a large part in determining workplace wardrobe. More traditional industries such as banking stick to a business attire dress code. More current industries have a more lenient dress code. But just because you can wear sweatpants to work doesn't necessarily mean you should.

The wardrobe you build says a lot about you. It’s a personal reflection of your style. What you choose to put in your wardrobe should flatter you. Over time, you want to build a wardrobe that is versatile enough to cover you from formal to casual and everything in between. Your work wardrobe should reflect your position and your industry. A senior position at a bank would require a very different wardrobe from that of a senior position at a tech start up. If you’re office is more on the casual side, don’t think that means your wardrobe can be reflective of the same thing you wear to the park with your kids. Even in a casual environment, you can still look professional in jeans. Be thoughtful about your wardrobe and what you want it to say about you.

So whether it’s dressing for work, a family reunion, or even date night, be thoughtful about your wardrobe. When it comes to work, dress for the job you want. I remember once hearing the phrase “you can never be over-dressed”. I think for the most part that’s true. I’ve found it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. When in doubt, take the high road and dress it up.

Below I’ve highlighted a few options in versatile pieces that will go far in your wardrobe.

The right cardigan can make all the difference. Depending on your style and the occasion you have lots of choices in this great layering piece. A delicate stylish cardigan can dress up an outfit. A boyfriend cardigan can give your outfit an edge. These two cardigans below (both from Ann Taylor Loft) offer a little feminine structure to your outfit. Perfect for business casual (paired with a blouse and pencil skirt or trousers) or date night (with a V-neck tee or tank and jeans).

These two dresses (both from Ann Taylor) offer versatility to go from the office to evening out. What about a school fundraiser or charity auction? We all have different functions that we find ourselves struggling to dress for at the last minute. A simple black shift dress can be the answer in a pinch when you’re unsure what you wear. A wrap dress is classic and timeless. Both options are easy and flattering. Why makes things complicated? Keep a simple solid dress in your wardrobe that can be dressed up or down in a moments notice and you’ll never be caught with nothing to wear!

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Ann Taylor has a section on their website highlighting their work wardrobe options. In fact there are several retailers offering this type of collection shopping where you can pick the style of clothing you are shopping for to help filter your options.

These two J. Crew blazers show just how “non-traditional” your blazer can be. There is a good chance you already have a black or navy blazer in your closet. But what about a blazer with a twist? This velvet option adds texture and sophistication to an otherwise very plain tank and jeans. Imagine what it might do for a little black dress. The metallic tweed blazer is also featured over a white t-shit and pants offering a quick pick me up (perfect for date night). But this same blazer could easily be paired with a tank and pencil skirt, a shift dress or your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans. The structure in these pieces adds a little formality to an otherwise casual look.

As you can see from these few examples, there’s plenty of options in versatile clothing pieces that can keep you dressed appropriately for just about any event. You don’t have to buy a special outfit for brunch with the family. You also don’t have to wear sweatpants to work. Invest in a few key pieces and add on from there. When in doubt keep it simple and appropriate.

How To Stand Out In A Crowd

If you follow this blog, you know that I love award season. So I was sitting front and center to my tv last night to catch the Golden Globes. Now, not only do I love the award show but I think I might even love the red carpet more. I enjoy seeing what everyone is wearing, picking up the trends and seeing how each actor’s personality comes through in their choice of wardrobe for the evening. Last night did not disappoint.

There were numerous gorgeous gowns on the red carpet. And many stunning ladies in attendance. However, the one lady it seemed to me who was the most talked about today was Kaley Cuoco. And for good reason.

Kaley wore a beautiful Monique Lhuillier gown, navy on top and a large white skirt with two details worth mentioning. One is the black bow around her waist. Bows were everywhere last night. These are clearly the detail trend of the season. Worn at the waist, the neck, the back and even in the hair, bows were a hot trend last night and I expect this is the only the beginning. The second detail worth mentioning was Kaley’s pockets. Yes, her dress had pockets. And this detail it turns out is the most important.

In a sea of gorgeous women, how is it that Kaley Cuoco stood out? It appeared to me as I watched the red carpet that Kaley walked on it as if she owned it. She walked with an air of confidence, poise and relaxation that made her that much more noticeable. And where did all that confidence and poise come from? Those pockets. No really. Hear me out.

I had the pleasure of attending the Massachusetts Women’s Conference in December, during which I heard Elizabeth Gilbert speak. I loved her speech and one of the concepts she touched on is our need as women to achieve relaxation. Seems practically impossible in this day and age. But last night on that red carpet, Kaley may have been the most relaxed women in attendance, and it showed. In a relaxed state, we can much more easily be present. That’s exactly what Kaley was. She was present in the moment last night and it radiated in her beauty.

It was something in those pockets that gave Kaley a sense of relaxation and confidence. And those qualities instantly enhance your appearance. This is something I always emphasize with my clients. What matters most about what you wear, is that you’re comfortable in it. That makes all the difference. So if you’re looking for a tip on how to stand out in a room full of beautiful ladies: relax, smile, and be present.

Reflections on 2018 from Beacon Style

As I look back on 2018 both personally and professionally, it has been a big year. Besides the amazing people that I’ve met this year through this business, Beacon Style debuted on Instagram and went to New York Fashion Week. Instagram has presented an amazing opportunity to reach a new audience and play on a new platform. NYFW was a spectacular opportunity to be a part of the world I love to admire from the outskirts.

I attended the TIbi fashion show and was blown away. Tibi expresses a classic, chic, effortless style that speaks to me. These clothes are a slightly unique spin on classics with just the right amount of trendy thrown in for good measure. The quality of these items is on par with the price point. The fabrics are enticing and durable. These are definitely investment pieces. They will last in your closet, one season to the next.

One of my goals in 2019, is to be more thoughtful about the items I add to my wardrobe. Often we get caught shopping last minute for an event that we may have forgotten about. For which, we probably purchase something that isn’t quite right for us (due to time constraints). Wouldn’t it be great if you had that perfect go to outfit for any occasion already sitting in your wardrobe? That’s the goal. Build up a quality wardrobe that answers any invite. Tibi is a great place to start. And lucky for you…. it’s sale time.

So during my trip to New York this fall, I had the opportunity to pop into the Tibi shop and try things on. You can see a few of the outfits I tried on below, many of which are now on sale.

So if you’re interested in building up that basic “go to” investment wardrobe, now is a great time to start. Invest a little extra in yourself this coming year. Take a little time for yourself. Invest in things that are going to make your life easier. Take the time to clean out your closet and take inventory of what you have. Shop smart. Let go of items you no longer use. Do a little something to pamper yourself.

Here are some of my favorites from the Tibi end of season sale. What an amazing year it has been. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2019!
