The Importance of Color

Most of us have more neutrals in our closet that we do any other color. Navy, tan, brown, gray, black & white, all qualify as neutrals. These are great base colors to have in your wardrobe. They work great alone or combined with other colors. Depending on your complexion, different shades of these colors will look better than others. While I’m all for having a good base of neutrals in your wardrobe, I also think that enhancing these classics with additional color is key. I personally love a good pop of color. Picture your little black dress with a bright blue shoe or yellow clutch. It creates excitement and calls attention to an otherwise basic outfit.

Now, maybe you’re living in your neutrals because you don’t want to call attention to yourself. Perhaps you feel more comfortable going through life just blending in with the background. I get that. I’ve been there. But what you probably don’t realize is that even a little color will go a long way. Maybe you can start by adding color in your accessories. A pair of green earrings, or a purple bracelet could match a black dress. Maybe a yellow tote bag to go with your gray pants and black sweater. Start small if that’s where you are comfortable. Suddenly that extra little pop of color will actually add sunshine to your day. (Think about the cloudy gray days where you have absolutely no energy to get anything done versus the bright sunny days that fly by!) That little bit of color won’t call out a lot of attention but it will put a smile on your face. You’ll be surprised to find that it can actually boost your confidence level.

Another aspect of color that we may not be aware of, is how it can affect the pieces that we choose to buy when we’re shopping.

J. Crew Embroidered Circles Sleeveless Top

Here’s a perfect example. These two tops are the same style and print – just two very different colors. Depending on your complexion these two tops can look vastly different on you. The pale pink may wash out your complexion, while the blue may actually help your complexion to glow, or vice versa. If you tried on the pale pink and thought, this top doesn’t look good, would you recognize that the problem is the color versus the style? Would you know to pick the blue because it works better with your complexion before you even try it on?

Color becomes incredibly important when picking your clothing and accessories. The colors that complement our complexion are naturally going make our features pop, make our skin look brighter and help our complexion glow. These are the colors are that you should look for in your key pieces so that you can add that pop to any neutral. Pay closer attention to the color in your wardrobe and see the difference when you put on a blue or black or pink shirt. Then the next time you go shopping you’ll know what the best color to pick off the rack is before you even try it on!
