Age Limits?

Do you ever wonder if you're too old to wear something? Do you think: it's too short, too revealing, too tight, too trendy? Do you ever see someone and think "she's too old to be wearing that"? There are a lot of questions about "age appropriate" clothing.

In my opinion, this issue is not black and white. I think factors such as personality, body type and occasion play a large part in deciding what goes. For example, I'm not sure that I would recommend skinny leather pants or a bodycon leopard print dress to your 80 year old grandmother. But I can't say with certainty what the cut off age for these items should be.

I think dressing for your body type and personality are important factors. You will be most confident when wearing something you're comfortable in. Comfort will come from wearing something that is true to your style and personality. I think taking into consideration what's on trend is also important. And item that is considered on trend is going to have a wider age range. If you're satisfying these three areas you're probably headed in the right direction. So maybe it's time to talk about where you shop.

There are stores that are specifically geared to a younger crowd. Forever 21, Aeropostale, American Eagle and Abercrombie are just a few examples of stores with a younger focus. These stores cater to the needs of a younger audience. They tend to carry items that are considered on trend and appealing to a younger demographic. There are also retailers that focus on an older audience. These would include J.Jill, Chicos's and Talbots for example. These retailers are interested in clothing that will flatter an older clientele. As a consumer, it's important to pay attention to the marketing efforts of retailers to understand if they are suited to your needs.

Another factor to take into consideration is how to put together an outfit. You might feel like leggings are for a younger crowd and no one over 40 should ever wear them. However, if you are someone who knows how to pair those leggings with a cute tunic dress and high boots to wear to a house party, then I say..... Good for you! Understanding how to pair items and how to wear them can be key to making them age appropriate!

Should you find that you put on a outfit, look in the mirror and say "Am I too old for this?" I would recommend taking your picture and looking at it objectively. Things look different in a photograph than they do in the mirror sometimes. It's worth taking a second look if you're having doubts.

If you want to be more confident that you're pulling together an age appropriate wardrobe, there are a few considerations. First, be sure to shop at age appropriate retailers. Second, dress for your body type. Third, consider looking for inspiration in magazine or online. Pinterest can be a great place to look for recommendations on outfit ideas for your age bracket. Check out the catalogs for your favorite retailers or magazines that are designed for your age and lifestyle. Taking the time to do your homework in this area can pay off.

Be true to your style, and have fun with it! If you're comfortable and confident, it will speak volumes, no matter your age!
