What to pack for a weekend getaway... with a toddler

Basic rules for packing apply across the board: Pack items that are versatile and can easily mix and match with other pieces. Try to pack items that can transition easily from day to night or casual to dressy. This ensures that you’re covered for whatever type of situation might arise while you are away!

We took a quick trip to NYC last weekend with my oldest son. We have traveled with the kids before but usually for a longer trip. This was our first weekend getaway with one of the kids.

Before the kids came along I use to take weekend trips to NYC all the time! As I was packing for this trip I realized just how different my wardrobe choice became when packing for a family trip. First off, comfort becomes even more important than usual. We wanted to show my oldest as much of NYC as we could in a 24 hour period. This translates to comfortable shoes, versatile wear and a bag that can hold snacks/wet wipes/tissues/ect.

We got lucky with a gorgeous fall weekend in NYC. With temps in the high 50s and low 60s I didn't have to worry about packing all the extra cold weather accessories. So what are my go to items for this type of trip? Considering the warm temps, I traveled in a vest and packed a quilted jacket for cooler evening temps. I also traveled in loafers and packed cute flats. I lived in jeans for the weekend and carried a mid-size canvas tote.

When traveling with kids you are very aware of the fact that spills and messes are expected. This meant bringing an extra top & bottom that could easily be a substitute in case I was the victim of an accident. I also chose a canvas tote that could easily be wiped clean.

What do you carry in your handbag for a trip with the kids? I had wet wipes, a tide to go pen, animal crackers, water bottle, tissues, phone, wallet, hair tie, Advil and lip gloss. If you have kids that are still in diapers that requires a few more items.

Finally if you're trying to plan outfits for this type of weekend away, here are a few tips. Pick a pair of comfortable shoes to travel in and pack one more to fit the occasion. Shoes that would work best: riding boots, ankle booties, loafers, ballet flats and sneakers. Choose comfortable bottoms that can be versatile: leggings, jeans, joggers offer just a few ideas. Pair with a neutral top (something lightweight - sweater/cotton top/blouse). Wearing something both neutral and lightweight will make your outfit more versatile for whatever activities your family decides to partake in. Keep jewelry to a minimum. Whatever your staples are should work fine for the weekend. Since you're wearing a lightweight top, be sure to bring a warm jacket and scarf.

Keep everything in one travel bag for yourself, bring your handbag with easy access to whatever you might need plane, and a backpack that your child can carry with his/her own belongings. Keep it simple and organized and you'll be ready for anything!
