Current Trends...

I've been seeing trends in retail over the last few months. It can be great to incorporate current trends into our wardrobe but sometimes it can be hard to know the best way to make the most of what we're seeing in stores and magazines. The one thing we don't want is to buy a piece that we will only wear once and then sits in our closet forever. So let's see if we can critic the trends that we're seeing and figure out how to make them work in our wardrobes.

1. Ruffles: I've been seeing ruffles on tops in all kinds of patterns. At a very basic level this adds volume. If you have broad shoulders and then add ruffles on your shoulders as volume, it probably won't be attractive. However, if you have a smaller chest and wear a top that has ruffles in the chest which add volume, this could be just what you were looking for. The key will be to try on any piece with volume and see how it accentuates your body. If you choose to go with ruffles, make sure that the rest of your outfit leans towards a more simple and slim silhouette. Ruffles will draw your eye. So make sure that you are drawing eyes to a place that you're comfortable with!

2. Sequins: A few years ago, I purchased a really cute sequin tank top from J.Crew in rose pink. I think I wore it once and it continues to sit in my closet today. It's super cute so I can't bear with to part with it but I find that I don't have the right opportunity to wear it. Well, I just saw on Pinterest, a sequin tank top layered over a white button down and topped with a blazer. It looks great! What a great idea that I am bummed I didn't come up with sooner! I am all over this and planning to try it out very soon!

3.Chunky Turtleneck: These sweaters are getting more popular this season. I love the way they look so comfy and cozy. I suggest looking for two things when you consider purchasing this type of sweater. One, be careful what color you purchase. A light color can be tough in a turtleneck as you risk your makeup coming off on it. Two, a turtleneck can be more flattering than a cowlneck. A turtleneck sits closer to your neck. A cowlneck is looser and can get wrinkled under a coat or scarf. It sits farther away from the neck and doesn't provide as much warmth or coverage. Try both styles on and see what works best for you!

4.Fringe: I am not the biggest fan of the fringe trend. However, done correctly, it can look amazing. I've seen fringe incorporated on everything from booties, to bags, dresses, skirts and more. I like the look especially when it is subtly incorporated in key pieces. This particular Anthropologie top incorporates fringe in a flattering statement like fashion. If you're interested in Fringe, look for pieces that incorporate this detail as a subtle statement.

Keep your eyes open for trends in retail. If you see something that you like, look into ways that you can incorporate it into your current wardrobe. Even in small subtle ways.... a little can go a long way!
