Items that Last From One Fall to the Next

I like to buy clothing that has staying power. By that I mean, it will last more than one season. This is especially true if I am going to invest good money in an item. This probably explains why I have such a classic style. I like to incorporate trendy pieces when they work for me. I've been hearing a lot recently about styles being "on trend". I think some items are timeless and those are the ones I look for.

Need some examples of what I'm thinking in terms of timeless for Fall?

#1. Cashmere

The word alone is luxurious, isn't it? You really can't go wrong with cashmere. Years ago, I bought a gray crew neck cashmere sweater from Old Navy. That's right, OLD NAVY. I have no idea what they were doing selling cashmere but I scooped up one of those sweaters as fast I could. I couldn't tell you want I paid for it but clearly it was a fraction of what you pay anywhere else for the same sweater. Haven't seen them sell it since but I always keep my eye open.

J. Crew sells gorgeous Italian Cashmere every year. These sweaters are the softest, warmest and coziest that I own. They come in every style and ever color. This is one indulgence that's totally worth it.

#2. A Wool Blazer

I have a light charcoal gray wool blazer from Banana that I again purchased years ago. I pull it out every Fall. It works great as a jacket until the weather gets too cold and then perfect as a layering piece. It works with everything from jeans to your shift dress. I love the versatility of this piece.

#3. The Boyfriend Cardigan

This piece has been around a long time. Maybe it has not always existed under this title. But the slightly longer, V-neck cardigan has been around the block. I own several of these in varying colors and textures. These are great layering pieces for cooler weather. Again, these have great versatility but I love how they can give a feminine outfit just a little edge. Be sure to get the right size. Just because it's called the boyfriend cardigan it should still look like it was made for you. If you're buying a size too big, it won't work the way you want it to. We are looking for edgy, not frumpy. For example, take a shift dress with a pair of pumps and big jewelry. Then layer on the boyfriend cardigan...perfect!

#4. Have you guessed it? The Shift Dress!

This style comes back every year. It works well with so many different body types and it can be worn as a great starter piece. Whether you add a blazer, a cardigan, a moto jacket, a belt, a scarf, or a statement necklace, the dress goes a long way in your wardrobe. I've also seen the sleeveless shift worn with a crisp button down underneath (also a cute look). If you don't already have one in your closet, it's worth a try.

The best part about all of these pieces is that they are available almost everywhere. You can find these in any of the stores that you are most recently shopping. Whether you are looking to go for a cheaper version or all out, these styles can be found in so many different varieties that you're sure to come across on them on your next shopping trip!
